Memorial

Samus’s story began in 2013, when a stray cat made a hidden nest in the backyard and gave birth to nine kittens. Their little den was tucked away in a patch of grass, which seemed like a clever hiding spot until the rains came. One stormy night, the kittens’ cries could be heard over the thunder. Their rescuers rushed out into the storm with umbrellas that quickly turned inside out, determined to save the tiny family. When they thought all the kittens were safe, something didn’t feel right, so they went back into the rain again and found one more kitten still waiting to be rescued. The next day, the mother cat returned and carefully moved them to another hiding place. A week later, another storm rolled through, and the same scene played out again with umbrellas ruined, hearts racing, and the rescuers once again making sure not a single kitten was left behind. This time, the mother never returned. The nine little ones were raised by hand, fluffy and full of energy, each with their own distinct personality. Their family included Artemis, a gray kitten with a white patch on his chest and paws; Constantine, mostly white with gray spots and plenty of attitude; Maverick, who went to live with Aunt Jana, Uncle Clay, and cousin Jett; and finally Samus, the brown kitten who looked like a tiny Maine Coon. He stayed outdoors a little longer than the others before officially joining the family. He got his name from Metroid’s Samus Aran, a fitting namesake for such a bold and independent spirit, though it turned out Samus was a “he,” not the “she” his name suggested. Not long after the kittens were rescued, their rescuers caught a glimpse of the father cat one night. Out of the dark came a massive, shadowy figure charging across the yard. For a split second, they were convinced it was a werewolf. Instead, it was an enormous tomcat with wild eyes and fur so thick he looked almost mythical. There was no question where Samus and his siblings got their size and presence. Samus had a remarkable talent for causing chaos, and an even greater talent for being loved despite it. He peed on everything he could claim, once hitting the same bed twice in one night, but his big eyes and soft purrs made it impossible to stay mad at him. He struggled with separation anxiety, often hiding in cabinets or closets when he was scared, but he always found his way back into a waiting lap. When he loafed, he felt like a warm cloud, except for the moments he put all his weight into one paw while kneading like he was earning a living. Samus is survived by his sister, Constantine; brother, Maverick; his original adopter and sister, Landri Brown and her husband, Lance, and their children, Gabriel and Mackenzie; his chosen parents, Trent Smith and Pinkie; his fur siblings, Cleocatra, Creasy Bear, and Jasper; and many friends and loved ones who will forever remember his mischief, loyalty, and love. A memorial service will be held at 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 12, 2025, in the TSB Global Discord Server, led by Reverend Helios. Memorial contributions may be made to Chewy, who provided compassionate care to his brother during his illness and passing. Samus, thank you for the laughter, the love, and the paw prints you left on every surface and in every heart you touched.
