Snickerdoodle passed away on June 28, 2021 surrounded by her family. She was about 11 years old, and had been diagnosed with cancer and other age related dog conditions. Snickers was a cherished pet. A certified service dog. A shedder that never stopped; she gave me the most beautiful accessories to all my outfits. She was a gift. A blessing. A dog. My dog. Our dog. I was not much of a doggie mom. I was not one of those people that went crazy over puppies, felt that need to have a pet, or wanted to care for a dog. I was an ’its just a dog’ kind of person. I was told that I needed to make a choice as to get a service dog, or basically give up many things most people, including myself, take for granted.  Doing research and finding out the waiting list, the cost, all the hoops to jump through and given no other choice, I did it. I met the Epilepsy Foundation Service Dog Program Director and PAWS with a cause, which brought me 4 dogs and we began acclimation training. It was a difficult and strenuous procedure. Snickers was the dog that was the best fit for me…. But let me tell you;  I did not want to pay the price I was given for her, I was not ready for her, I rejected her at first and was quite as stubborn as most of you know me to be. I mean, a stunning dog, with a name of a candy bar- caring for a 400 pound handler… REALLY? But only after a few days, her intelligence, love and support stole my heart. Snickers would place her paw on my knee and everything became instantly OK. She never left my side. Snickers was born on May 30, 2010 from a family of certified service dogs. Her human breeder was legally names Cookie Saville. She has a sister named Ginger Snap, that is also a service dog. Snickers was a medium sized working dog, with the most beautiful copper coat, piercing almond shaped blue eyes, and a heart of gold. Snickers had extensive training and acclimation sessions. She was an extremely obedient and loving dog with deep soulful eyes that spoke of her high intellect. Snickers was a survivor of storms, fireworks, Snovid and multiple illnesses, but she was also a constant provider of comfort and love.  She was there through many tests, procedures, surgeries, seizure episodes, and so many infusions. Her presence allowed me to travel to visit my friends and family.  She allowed me to continue to drive, work and be independent before my seizures were understood and controlled.  She enjoyed train rides, walks at the lake, being pampered at the doggie salons and being needed. She was important. To say that she will be missed couldn’t begin to come close to describing the unfathomable grief I feel with her passing. There is a hole in my heart that will never be filled though I take comfort in knowing that we will, at some point in another life, meet again. I am not 100% sure of the name of the place where Snickies is now; Heaven, Valhalla, rainbow bridge or just the other side, but I hope she has tennis balls, lots of carrots, amazing treats and humans or angels. She loved taking care of me, even if it was exhausting. Everyone deserves a friend like Snicks, I am comforted by our memories and knowing that she lived a full life and always knew she was loved.
