Woodrow “Little Man” 3/9/2014 – 7/8/2023 It is with broken hearts that we say goodbye to our dear boy Woodrow who passed away peacefully from this world with his mom and dad by his side on 7/8/2023. Woodrow was born on March 9th, 2014 on a ranch in Benson, Utah to a single, working mother. His mom was a hard worker but had a special sweetness that she passed onto her boy. His life on the ranch was idyllic for any dog but especially for an aspiring, working Border Collie. His early weeks were spent in a comfy, straw lined horse stall, rough housing with his brothers and sisters. He also had several human siblings who affectionately called him “Chunk” for his round belly and healthy appetite. It was love at first sight between the “Chunk” and his new Dad and they have been inseparable ever since. “Chunk” was soon renamed Woodrow, after the famed Texas Ranger, Captain Woodrow Call of the beloved Western “Lonesome Dove”. Woodrow went to all the best schools growing up. He received private instruction from Canine’s Unleashed in Logan , UT. Then he went on for advanced studies at Ildewire Dog Training in Ogden, UT. He was often a naughty student and got in trouble with the “mean teacher” regularly. However, on graduation day, to everyone’s amazement, he was the “last dog staying” on the “out of sight” down stay competition…the highest level skill taught in his class. We could almost hear him saying “Ha ha, take that mean teacher!” Woodrow was always full of fun and surprises. He loved camping, swimming and hiking and was our fierce protector both at home and out in the wild. He always faced out toward the dark night ready to jump to the defense of his pack on a moment’s notice. Woodrow never did herd sheep or cattle but being from hardworking ranch stock he looked at everything as his “job”…and I mean everything! From guarding the campsite to watching T.V, to his backseat and front seat driving Woodrow was always “on the job” no matter what we were doing. He treated everything we did together as if it was his life’s calling. He could sit quietly on the couch watching T.V. or hike a mountain trail, no matter, he was on it! As long as he was with us…he was on the job, doing what he always did best…watching, defending, protecting and most of all…loving. By far, Woodrow’s favorite pastime was his walks with his Dad. They could often be seen in the foothills of Mendon, up on the family farm where he could swim in the canal or the pond. But the highlight of both their lives were their walks though the beautiful parks of our home away from home…Pinedale, WY. His dad affectionately called it their “three park tour”. Starting at Shelter Park then through American Legion where Woodrow would jump right into his favorite swimming holes along Pine Creek no matter how cold. They would always conclude by coming around through Boyd Skinner Park where they often saw moose, deer and other wildlife. Woodrow was an amazing outdoor companion as he never spooked the wild critters or made any move to try and give chase. Only if a moose was close and tried to charge, would he intervene to protect his Dad. Otherwise, he practiced “live and let live”, that is unless you were a cat or a squirrel, then all bets were off. Woodrow had a never ending supply of love that extended to his entire family. Visits from Terri, Brandon, K.T., Josh, Tracey and Tina were always met with a happy greeting filled with exuberant joy. This was especially true with the most recent addition to his pack, our granddaughter “Baby Hazel”. He was clearly a little jealous at first as his Dad’s attention was diverted now and then, but that soon gave way to a bond of fierce protection and love for his “baby girl”. Woodrow loved the other dogs in his family, his nieces and nephews Atlas, Delilah, Dott, Roe and Addie and all the dear ones who have gone on before him…he loved to play and rough house until they were all totally exhausted. Woodrow lived life to the fullest. He started each day with a wagging tail and was always ready for the next adventure. He never failed to greet everyone in his family with love and enthusiasm. And we will never forget his sweet smile that he gave so freely. Yes, he taught us so much about how to live a happy life because he certainly did. As a family of dog lovers we have often joked that any dog lucky enough to join us really hits the “doggie lottery”. Well in Woodrow’s case, it was definitely the other way around. It was us who won the “doggie lottery”! He was truly one in a million. We will miss you terribly Little Man… But as you find safe passage breaking the trail that each one of us will surely tread, we are forever grateful to you…our sweet, loyal, boy…for making a safe path for us to follow. Mission accomplished…job well done. Until we meet again we will picture you there, waiting patiently for us across the rainbow bridge, by that eternal gate to the Great Beyond. **Our deepest appreciation to Dr. Kemp and the staff at Cache Meadow Veterinary Clinic for their professional care and kindest concern for Woodrow and our family over the years.Guestbook
